Laurent Duvernay-Tardif von Super-Bowl-Sieger Kansas City Chiefs ist der erste American Footballer, der die Möglichkeit in Anspruch nimmt, wegen des Coronavirus auf die nächste Saison zu verzichten.
Der Kanadier hat ein abgeschlossenes Medizinstudium und arbeitete in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten in einer stationären Pflege-Einrichtung nahe seiner Heimatstadt Montreal.

Die NFL hat mit der Spielergewerkschaft NFLPA ausgehandelt, dass Profis, die wegen Covid-19 ernsthafte Bedenken haben, unkompliziert von ihren Vertragspflichten zurücktreten können, aber trotzdem abgesichert sind. Laut US-Medien wird Duvernay-Tardif in der kommenden Saison 150'000 US-Dollar bekommen. 2,75 Millionen wären es, wenn er regulär spielen würde.
«Während der Offseason an vorderster Front zu sein, hat mir eine andere Perspektive auf die Pandemie eröffnet», erklärte der 29-Jährige auf Twitter. «Ich kann es mir nicht erlauben, möglicherweise den Virus weiterzutragen, indem ich den Sport betreibe, den ich liebe. Wenn ich ein Risiko eingehe, dann werde ich das tun, indem ich mich um Patienten kümmere.»
Duvernay-Tardif ist laut Liga-Angaben der einzige NFL-Spieler mit einem Doktorat. Viele Fans reagierten derweil äusserst positiv auf den Entscheid des Franko-Kanadiers.
